Bailey & Tom’s wedding at The Caves, Edinburgh

Bailey and Tom are one of those amazingly laid-back couples, who seem to take planning a wedding from thousands of miles away entirely in their stride. They chose The Caves in Edinburgh’s Old Town (which you may have heard us say we absolutely love, once or twice now!), for their destination wedding. And what an incredible day it was!

Not only do they win the award for one of the funniest Best Men speeches we’ve ever heard at a wedding, but this could also have been the most laughter filled room for bridal preps we have experienced. And man, did their bridesmaids rock the mic!

We love it when our couples are happy to just hop in a cab with us and go explore – it’s often these unplanned moments (and the unexpected folks/dogs we meet along the way!) that turn out to be some of the best parts of the day. We chase the light, we chat, we take pretty pictures and then we hightail it back to the party. And what a party it was!

Bailey & Tom – Thank you for inviting us to capture your amazing day, we had the best time with you guys and your wonderful people! Christina & Jay x

10 years

I’m just going to start this by saying that I sat down to write a completely different blog post. Perhaps it’s been the influence of all this week’s news (a change in the Doomsday Clock will do that, I guess), but what I had planned to write came out as this instead…

2017 is a pretty big year for us. Not only are we celebrating 10 years of Elemental, but we will also celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary this spring.

We’ve been looking through our archives and feeling a little nostalgic (not going to lie – there has been a tear or two) to see all the incredible people and places we’ve photographed over the years. To think that so many people have chosen us to capture their wedding, or their next journey into the wacky world of parenthood (we’re allowed to say that as we live there too!), is pretty humbling.

Weddings are such a momentous occasion – it’s so rare in our international world to be able to bring the people we love together to celebrate. Our own wedding was the only time our families have been able to do this, separated as we are by an ocean.

And they can be bittersweet too. The trust we have had placed in us to capture the most private moments – a bride lighting a candle in memory of her dad, a tribute to the brother who cannot be there to take his place at the top table – fills us with awe.  It’s something that we will never take lightly. For us, photography is at its most powerful in these moments.

We love keeping in touch with our couples and their families after their weddings. Our circle of close friends has grown over the past 10 years and our world is richer now than it was then, being full of so many people’s stories and experiences. And so much love. Some of the people in the photos we have taken are, sadly, no longer with us, and some of the people whose photos we have taken have now made new tiny humans of their own.

As our own baby girl was growing inside me, I played What A Wonderful World to my bump every day, and now that she is about to turn four, we sing it as a threesome, Mila’s voice rising and falling happily with ours. In a week where the world seems to have gone even more off kilter than most of us could ever have imagined and in a year when we celebrate this major milestone of our own, one thing seems more clear to us now than ever before. Love is always the answer.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of our lives these last ten years. It has been an honour to capture your stories, and to have so much fun along the way has been a bonus! Here’s to love.

Cycling photography awards

We have received some amazing news! One of Jay’s Isle of Skye cycling photos has been shortlisted in the Mark Gunter Photography Awards – an international photography competition run by CyclingTips.

There were 1,200 entries and the judges, Ashley & Jered Gruber are photographers whose work we absolutely love – so we’re double stoked!

Jay’s image is also up for the People’s Choice Award – If you can take a moment to vote for him by heading to Facebook and liking this photo, we will love you forever.

If you only knew how early he has to set his alarm to hit the road and catch the light like this (plus all the hours that went into the planning of this photo)!

Alex & Rich’s wedding at Cameron House, Loch Lomond

One of our favourite things about this time of year is that we get to catch up on our blogging. And we have been so very excited about sharing Alex & Rich’s day!

Aside from winning last year’s prize for being based in the most enviable location (they live in Bermuda, but Scotland holds a very special place in their hearts), Alex and Rich also gave us one of our most exciting moments of the year. It all started with an email asking if we were scared of flying (ehm, where do we sign up?!).

And so it was that on a beautiful autumn day we got to capture all the love, joy, laughter and fabulous dancing, that they and their wonderful friends and family brought to Cameron House. From the emotional first look in the woods to the seaplane flight over Loch Lomond and the surrounding hills, it was one seriously beautiful day.

Alex & Rich – We have absolutely loved getting to know you both over the past year, and are already missing your smiles and chat! We hope married life is treating you very well so far and watch out, we may just take you up on that offer to visit sometime…

Great emotion captured in this set of images. I bet the couple were delighted with the final result. Superb work.

Absolutely powerful and moving images! So good!

2016 Highlights

From watching the Northern Lights over the North-east of Scotland to visiting the beaches and lava fields of Iceland (and going for midnight troll hunts with our little girl!), it’s been quite a year of adventures.

Some of our other favourite moments are captured here in the most liked 9 photos on our Instagram – like when Jay got to join Alex & Rich on a scenic seaplane flight over Loch Lomond before their wedding ceremony this autumn. It was pretty breathtaking stuff!

We have loved getting to work with so many wonderful people in such incredible places this year and can’t wait to get out with our cameras and photograph all the love stories and adventures 2017 will bring!

Until then, have a merry Hogmanay and a very happy New Year!
