Northern Lights over the Scottish Highlands

We’ve been really lucking out with the Northern Lights lately – we were treated to an amazing  show as the clock struck midnight at New Year and again on Mother’s Day (the perfect present to go with the celebratory glass of wine I was having at the time!). It’s definitely a big plus of country living – although we are missing good coffee something fierce (if only flat whites could be delivered…).

One of the most incredible moments of last year was driving up the A9 after visiting the Enchanted Forest in Pitlochry (which we can highly recommend if you haven’t been before!), and having to pull over because the aurora was so distracting. A great problem to have! On the way, I had joked that it would be a brilliant way to end the night if we got to see the Northern Lights. Hearing the stags rutting in the hills at the same time was absolutely magical.

Mel & Chris – Engagement shoot, The Trossachs, Scotland

Seeing as it’s #ThrowbackThursday, we thought it was the perfect time to look back at this e-shoot we did at the end of last summer with the winners of the We Fell In Love wedding competition, Mel & Chris. It was one of those gorgeous long Scottish nights, and we were extra lucky in that Mel & Chris were more than happy to let us suggest locations for the shoot. The Trossachs is one of our favourite places – from lochs to mountains, it has a bit of everything we love most about Scotland (and a few midges too, but you can’t have it all!). We also thought it would make a perfect contrast to their wedding at Hopetoun House, a magnificent stately home just outside Edinburgh.

We absolutely love engagement shoots – not only do we have more time than on a wedding day to visit amazing locations like this and get extra creative, but it also allows us all to get to know each other a little better, and for the banter to really flow. Even the most nervous in front of a camera tend to relax after these shoots, knowing that our photography style is really relaxed and painless to be on the other end of!

We’ve got some incredible locations on our wish list for this year, so just hit us up with an email if you’d like more details on booking an engagement or couple shoot. They’re also a great way to celebrate an anniversary too!

Jennifer & Kevin’s wedding at Dalhousie Castle, Edinburgh, Scotland

While everyone else is desperate for spring to arrive, we’re still chasing winter (it must be the Canadian influence!). So it was an absolute treat to photograph Jen & Kevin’s very white wedding at Dalhousie Castle a few weeks back.

The day began with sunshine and a sprinkling of snow and, as if that wasn’t magical enough, snowflakes began to fall during the photo session too – so romantic! Add in a wonderful ceremony, with a very special delivery of the rings, a very fun bunch of family & friends, a whole lot of love & laughter, and a brilliant party, and it was an all round beautiful day.

Jen & Kevin – Thanks for welcoming us into your wedding day and for being totally up for those chilly outdoor photos. So worth the goosebumps!

Sarah & Bruce – Couple shoot in Edinburgh, Scotland

Given that we’ve had such a stormy start to the year here in Scotland, we’ve completely lucked out with our shoots lately. Storm Gertrude may have been raging around us, but just look at that gorgeous light! Major respect to Sarah & Bruce for braving the wintry weather for their Edinburgh eshoot – and for being down with hitting up so many great locations along the way, despite the chills – we’re keeping our fingers crossed that they’ll be basking in warmer light for their wedding this spring -they’ve earned it! Can’t wait!

Bronwyn & Christian – Arthur’s Seat elopement, Edinburgh, Scotland

After a little rest and relaxation (plus a lot of mince pie and prosecco action) over Christmas, our 2016 weddings kicked off on January 2nd with an incredibly special shoot.

We were so excited when Bronwyn & Christian, who live in Australia, got in touch to say they were planning to elope to Scotland. Not only did they want to tie the knot – literally – on Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano that watches broodingly over Edinburgh (ah-mazing!), but they were also keen to have photos taken in Armchair Books – an incredible warren of vintage tomes in the Old Town (to see it is to love it!).

And so it was that in wedding attire and hiking boots, Bronwyn & Christian, plus four of their closest friends, set off on a big, very muddy walk to the top of Arthur’s Seat, where they were married in a beautiful Humanist ceremony. The views were sensational, amazingly the weather played ball and we started to wonder why more people don’t get married outdoors in Scotland in winter!

Despite the attention of the local press, they managed to keep the whole thing a complete secret. Now that their family and friends have been told the wonderful news (they are over the moon for the happy couple!), we’re stoked to be able to share their photos. Here are some highlights of the day (choosing was sooooo tough!).

Bronwyn & Christian – We absolutely loved getting to capture your Scottish love story and wish you all the love and happiness in the world!
